Barrio Writers Workshop
The Guadalupe teams up with Barrio Writers, a non-profit organization that empowers teens through creative writing, higher education, and cultural arts. A FREE 8-week writing workshop offered at the San Antonio Central Library. Each workshop will be lead by a local, active writer in the community that will focus on social justice, empowerment, and making change.
First introduced in 2009 in Orange County, CA, Barrio Writers provides youth ages 14-19 with tools to improve their skills in reading, grammar, creative writing and freedom of expression through cultural arts. Each writing workshop is designed to empower the teenage community while preparing students for critical exploration of literatures against personal and social histories.
Each year, an anthology of Barrio Writers’ poetry and prose is published in an anthology, recently contracted by Stephen F. Austin University Press. In 2015, Barrio Writers 5th edition was a finalist for the “Best Educational Young Adult Book” by the International Latino Book Awards.
Barrio Writers is made possible through the partnership with the San Antonio Public Library Foundation.
Barrio Writers Workshop dates:
(March: 16, 23, 30, April: 6, 13, 20, 27, 4)
Location: San Antonio Central Library

“As a community, we bridge the gap between our youth, cultural pride and higher education; through collaboration we cultivate diversity in and out of the classroom, raise role models, and offer a new voice in literature.” – Sarah Rafael Garcia, founder
