The Ford Foundation Challenge Campaign

On January 23, 2002, the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center announced it has received a $1,000,000 endowment grant from the Ford Foundation.

The Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center's Director,
Maria Elena Torralva-Alonso states,
"The Endowment will help to ensure that the Center's work will continue. Monies received from the Ford Foundation, along with funds raised in a matching campaign, will be used to increase awareness about and sustain the Center's six disciplines: visual arts, media arts, theatre arts, xicano music and literature. Keeping the Latino culture alive for our children and our children's children is what the Center is all about, and with this generous grant from the Ford Foundation we are looking forward to doing that."Of the 28 "exemplary arts organizations" awarded these challenge grants across the country, the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center is the only Latino organization given funds by the Ford Foundation, and one of only two organizations in Texas. The Guadalupe must generate matching dollars within a five-year period by broadening its individual donor base. Matching monies must be raised by increasing the number of

members, individual donors and gifts from family businesses and family foundations. The funds will be utilized to increase the programming endowment, thus ensuring a bright future for each of the six disciplines.

The Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center's campaign theme, "Share the Arts… Dí Que Sí," states, "Say Yes" by giving to the Gudalupe Cultural Arts Center. The Guadalupe's mission and vision is to promote, preserve, present and develop the art & culture of the Chicano/Latino/Indigenous Peoples. Over the past twelve years, the Ford Foundation has awarded the Guadalupe with various grants totaling approximately $1.6 million. In fact, the Ford Foundation was the first major foundation to support the Guadalupe's artistic programming in the late eighties; thereby, securing the organization's place on the national scene of arts and cultural organizations across the country.
