The Literary Arts Program offers creative writing workshops for all ages, including Barrio Writers, a tuition-free program for youth ages 13-19, and presents a quarterly community event, Bards & Brew, which celebrates local poets. Our annual Macondo Writers’ Workshop, offered each summer for professional writers, has also expanded to include a 4-day festival of readings, as well as a signature reading series throughout the year. Visiting writers hold master-level classes for the community.
The Macondo Writers’ Workshop was founded by Sandra Cisneros in 1995 at her kitchen table and has influenced a great number of writers who travel to San Antonio to participate in the four-day conference. Focused on bringing together a community of poets, novelists, journalists, performance artists, and creative writers of all genres whose work is socially engaged, Macondo seeks to cultivate and support a community of literary activists on the page and off.
In 2012, Sandra gifted the workshop to the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center, and we are excited about its next phase, which includes a workshop for local high school students. Most recently, 2016 Poet Laureate of Texas and San Antonio native, Laurie Ann Guerrero, was brought on board to lead Macondo into its next phase and reestablish the literary arts programming at the Guadalupe.
Macondo Young Writers’ Workshop
Modeled after its parent workshop, the very first Macondo Young Writers’ Workshop seeks socially engaged youth writers working to advance creativity, foster generosity, and serve community. Currently, we are accepting applications from high school juniors and seniors (for 2016-2017 school year) who view their work and talents as part of a larger task of community-building and non-violent social change.
Barrio Writers: Summer Intensive
Barrio Writers is a youth writers’ workshop that empowers teens through creative writing, higher education prep, and cultural arts. The workshop will provide youth ages 14-19 with tools to improve their skills in reading, grammar, creative writing and freedom of expression. Each writing workshop is designed to empower the teenage community while preparing students for critical exploration of literatures through personal and social histories.
Bards & Brew:
Poet Laureate of Texas and San Antonio native Laurie Ann Guerrero hosts Bards & Brew, a community event that features the best of both our local poets and local breweries. Our past events have featured local favorites on the page and on the stage: Anthony “The Poet” Flores, Vocab Sanderson, Octavio Quintanilla, Natalia Trevino, Laura Van Prooyen, and Sheila Black among others, and have showcased Black Lab Brewing Company, Ranger Creek, and Freetail Breweries.
