Suggestion Box: Progreso Building Renovation Project
Plans to renovate the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center’s Progreso Drugstore Building (at the corner of Guadalupe St. and Brazos St. across from the Guadalupe Theater) have begun and the Guadalupe would like to hear suggestions from the community about how to utilize the space.
“It’s not just for us to have a fancy building or complex, it’s for the neighborhood and whole city,” Guadalupe executive director Jerry Ruiz told the Rivard Report. “We want to know how this building, as part of our organization, really speaks to a need. What can we provide?”
Through San Antonio’s 2012 Bond Program, which allocated $800,000 for the first phase of the project, plans are for the renovation of the first floor and exterior of the building. The project is scheduled to begin in early Summer 2016.
Acquiring funding for the second phase of the restoration (second floor) is still in progress.
If you would like to make suggestions or share ideas on how you think the Guadalupe should utilize this space, please fill out the form below. The only requirement for the building is that it must be open to the community. Some ideas that have been shared so far include a bookstore, classrooms, an art gallery, and a performance art space.
Please share your thoughts with us today! Learn more about the restoration project HERE and be on the lookout for our next community open forum in January 2016.
